Our mission: quality surgical care for every community, whatever a patient can afford.

AMISURG was founded and is chaired by Dr. Alagie Manneh, a pioneering Gambian surgeon. Trained at home, he became the first home-trained Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, and has dedicated his foundation to bringing that expertise to the communities that need it most.

Together with a new generation of Gambian doctors, the foundation takes surgery out of the capital and into the regions.

Where it begins

Our team of Gambian doctors plans each camp, mobilises volunteers and prepares supplies before setting out to the regions.

How a surgical camp works

Each camp is planned with the host hospital and the local community.

  1. Outreach

We inform communities about the camp dates and who can come to be seen.

  2. Screening

Doctors and students screen and consult patients to decide on the right care.

  3. Surgery

Eligible patients receive their operation free of charge at the host hospital.

  4. Medicines & follow-up

Patients leave with essential medicines and guidance for their recovery.
